My kiddos are obsessed with hot chocolate. Once fall starts to hit, it is a must that we have a stock of hot chocolate on hand.

During the winter and especially the holidays, hot chocolate is the drink of choice in this household.

Recently, we found the whole idea of hot chocolate bombs on Pinterest. I thought it would be a fun idea for the kids so we worked on learning how to make them.

They were instantly a hit.

Now, we enjoy making them for friends and family because they love them so much! It has even become a Christmas tradition!

How to make a hot chocolate bomb

This is how we like to make our chocolate bombs with marshmallows.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Kinder Chocolate Egg (we usually buy a large batch at a time for these)
  • 1 teaspoon of mini dehydrated marshmallows
  • 3 teaspoon of Hot Chocolate mix (we love using Swiss Miss)
  • 1 teaspoon of crushed candy cane (optional)
  • Milk or dairy substitute of choice.

If you don't want to use crushed candy canes, you can leave them out of the recipe. The same goes for the marshmallows.

How to put together the hot chocolate bombs with marshmallows:

Unwrap your chocolate egg and remove the toy by carefully cracking open the egg.

Once you have two egg halves, fill one half with your hot chocolate mix, mini marshmallows, and crushed candy cane.

Take a microwave-safe plate and warm it for approximately 1 minute in the microwave. Important: only warm up the plate, not the chocolate!

Stick the empty shell onto the warm plate to slightly melt the edges.

Quickly bring both halves of the eggshells together to form a seal and complete your “bomb”.

Once cooled, place your hot chocolate bomb in a cup and slowly pour hot milk over top.

Watch as the egg begins to crack open to reveal its delicious chocolate, marshmallow, and peppermint flavors.

Hot Chocolate Bombs Make Great Gifts!

They do! We love making hot chocolate bombs with marshmallows and giving them as gifts during the holidays.

To give as gifts: once you have put the hot chocolate bombs together, freeze them for about an hour or so. You just want to make sure the melted chocolate has set.

Then you can wrap them in cute packaging and give them to friends and family. Mix with them some chocolate covered pretzels or brownies for extra fun!

If I use a mold, what kind of mold can I use?

You will want to use any molds that work well for chocolate. They come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. Depending on the size, you may need more or less of the hot chocolate mix.
